When Your Past "Warrants" Legal Representation

There's a phone call I get frequently that goes something like this:

"I've been getting all these advertisements in the mail from lawyers and bail bondsmen but I have no idea why. Is something wrong? Am I in trouble?"

My response to this question is always the same, "Have you ever been arrested for a felony? Is it possible that you have a warrant out for your arrest?" (In the state of Missouri, a felony might include drug possession, theft over $500, assault, or resisting arrest).dogmail.jpg

If you have been receiving these types of ads and letters from attorneys and bail bondsmen in the mail, there is definitely a problem! Clients often wonder why something that happened months or even years ago has suddenly become an issue. Unfortunately, sometimes it just takes the police and prosecutors some time to gather the necessary evidence.  Let's take a drug possession charge for example. Most clients arrested for methanphedamines, heroin, MDNA, pills, or over an ounce of marijuana get released after they are booked.  The police then have to send the drugs/evidence to a lab to have its weight and chemical properties determined. Depending on where you were arrested, this may not have been classified as urgent and thus put on the back burner to be dealt with when time allowed.  So you were thinking since all this time has past that you must have been in the clear, right? No, not at all!

How Do I Deal With My Warrant?

You need to act quickly! There is a warrant out for your arrest. If you are found and arrested, you will be required to post bond to be released from jail until your court date.  Bonds for felonies are ususally set anywhere between $5,000-$25,000. Sometimes people get lucky and only have to post 10% of their bond amount in order to get released. This, unfortunately, is not always the case.  An attorney will be able to get the information you need on your warrant and bond in order for you to make an informed, thought out decision before an arrest is made.  I always tell my clients, it is far easier to get information on your bond and call your rich uncle for a loan in the comfort of your living room than it is to try to get someone to take your collect phone call from jail!
